CAD Design Trends in 2013

Jon Peddie Research (JPR) released its market study last year. Here are some highlights of the Worldwide CAD Market Report 2012, and what it means for Aussie SMEs this year.

New technologies opened new opportunities for CAD companies. Cloud computing, apps, and tablets provide high volume and low-cost consumer apps. Businesses can also offer boutique services through subscription.
New platforms and distribution models will provide affordable options for SMEs.

CAD follows economic trends. Revenues are at 38% in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), 37% in Americas, and 21% in Asia.  The total number of CAD users is growing faster in Asia and emerging markets.
Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as well as Mechanical Computer-aided Design (MCAD) markets are on the upswing, driven by the need for efficiencies, improvements, and new projects in emerging economies.
The report forecasts that market growth in Asia will outpace the West after 2012. Growth in India, China and other emerging markets will continue. Australia can look into this business opportunity, provided they get over the "them vs. us" mindset.

The low-cost and free CAD package makes its debut. 3D CAD will outpace 2D CAD as customers are willing to spend more to develop new processes.
Aussie SMEs can increase productivity by offshoring. The software package may be free, but the skill set needed is not.

Science and engineering degrees are gaining traction among graduates. American students are picking up science and engineering, while China pushes for higher education transformation.
Apart from low cost skilled labour, Aussies must look into other regional issues. A practical spot would be the Philippines. Neutral accent, minimal timezone difference, and affinity with western culture are useful in establishing a good working relationship.
